Hungarian Layered Cabbage

This Hungarian layered cabbage casserole with pork, rice, and Savoy cabbage, flavored with sweet paprika and topped with a layer of sour cream, is classic Hungarian comfort food.

Ingredient :

- 1 head of cabbage

- 1 pound ground beef

- 1 onion, chopped

- 4 cloves of garlic, minced

- 1 cup cooked rice

- 1 can diced tomatoes

- 1 cup sour cream

- 1 cup breadcrumbs

- Olive oil

- Salt and pepper

- Paprika

- Caraway seeds

Directions :

1. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).

2. In a large pot, bring water to a boil and add the whole head of cabbage. Let it cook for about 10-12 minutes, until the outer leaves are soft and can easily be removed. Remove the cabbage from the pot and let it cool.

3. In a separate pan, heat a tablespoon of olive oil over medium-high heat. Add the ground beef and cook until it is browned and fully cooked. Add in the chopped onion, minced garlic, salt, and pepper, and cook for an additional 2-3 minutes.

4. Once the cabbage is cool enough to handle, remove the outer leaves and discard them. Cut the remaining cabbage into thin strips.

5. In a casserole dish, start by layering the bottom with the cabbage strips. Then add a layer of the cooked ground beef mixture on top of the cabbage. Sprinkle some paprika and caraway seeds over the beef.

6. Next, add a layer of cooked rice on top of the beef. Spread the rice evenly and then add a layer of diced tomatoes on top of the rice.

7. Spread a layer of sour cream over the diced tomatoes.

8. Repeat the layers until all the ingredients are used up, ending with a layer of cabbage on top.

9. In a small bowl, mix together the breadcrumbs with a pinch of salt and pepper. Sprinkle the breadcrumb mixture evenly over the top layer of cabbage.

10. Cover the casserole dish with foil and bake in the preheated oven for 45 minutes.

11. After 45 minutes, remove the foil and bake for an additional 10-15 minutes, until the top is golden brown and crispy.

12. Let the casserole cool for a few minutes before serving. Enjoy your delicious Hungarian Layered Cabbage Casserole!
